Just the thing this Spring – get the look the easy way

This season may just be your laziest one yet

You know spring is here when you are colder now than you were last week when it was still winter. Go figure. But the other key indicator is in the shop windows because flowers are everywhere. Not real ones, of course. Posters, cardboard cut-outs and floral prints are plastered on every window and mannequin. But other than the usual trend for florals, what are the fashionistas saying are “THE” trends to follow? I’ve searched the blogosphere to give you the most agreed trends – and bring you tips for how to get the look on the cheap!

1. Ruffles

If it’s from the 1908s, it’s in. Shoulder pads, metallic fabrics, bright colours: it’s all on trend. But the main fashion feature being highlighted right now is the ruffled layer.

There’s a great range popping up in many of the high street stores already.
Don’t forget the op-shops. They’ll be making fashion dreams come true this season!

2. Deconstructed shirts

The look here appears to be that you went to bed drunk and slept in the first thing you found which turned out to be a shirt that belonged to your giant flatmate and when you woke up late the next morning you put on a skirt - any skirt, it doesn't have to match in any way - half tucked the shirt and you left for the office. Maybe you added a hat.

I love the advice from Vogue UK on this one – Buy a striped shirt and do the buttons up wrong. Alternatively, you can get an oversized shirt and only tuck in one side. Or wear a shirt dress open like a longline jacket. As long as the size is too big, then you’ll pull off this look.

3. Crazy sleeves

Pears can really celebrate this one! Sleeves are great for balancing a look when you’re not in the mood to be rump-focused. I love puffy sleeves and frilly sleeves, but you’ll find a lot of bell sleeves appearing too.

Consumers seemed to have be reluctant to follow this trends, so guess what? Sales webpages of high street stores and outlets stores have a lot of crazy sleeves in stock.

4. Athletic wear

If you’re not a fan of the gym, don’t worry. You don’t have to be going there to dress like it. Stretch fabrics, sporty stripes and geometric splashes of neon are becoming daywear standard looks.

Leggings with a white stripe down the leg or a crisp weatherproof jacket now say style, not just practical comfort. Go with it!

5. Word prints

Do we care what the words are? Maybe. But since the current trend includes the option to tuck your printed tee into your jeans it may not matter what’s written on it at all. You can’t see it properly anyway.

Get the look:

Any printed tee will do, but this could be another boon for the op shops. Or a good excuse to head over to Mum’s and pick up that old box of concerts tees and miscellanea that she’s been asking you to collect for the last 15 years.
